When you see a deputy you think of honor, integrity, selfless service, courage, pride, and leadership. Becoming a deputy sheriff is more than Just wanting to carry a gun and a badge you have to be passionate about it, you have to be couscous at all times because your life may hang in the balance along with those citizens who you protect. No matter what part of law enforcement you are in whether its the natural resources police, state rooper, MTA police, Baltimore county or Baltimore city they all have one mission into making the streets safer and protecting the lifes of the innocent . My paper is on the career of the deputy sheriff and in this paper I will inform you about what it takes to do this Job how this Job will affect your life and with this Job how you will change the lives of others. To become a deputy sheriff you have to go through a certain process to be considered for the position. Although it may be a lengthy time period in the iring process you do not need to have a college degree to be selected, but having some education is what departments like to see, For example having 60 or more hours of college credits. Some of the minimum qualifications before being able to apply for the Job is you must have an high school diploma, be a citizen of the united states, be 20 years old and 1/12 and have a drivers license that is active. After you have met the minimum requirements the next steps in the process would be the physical test, the written examination, background check interview, polygraph, sychological and drug screening. In the physical requirement test you will be expected to complete as many pushups and sit-ups as you can in a one minute time period and also complete a 1. 5 mile run. Before you can take this you will need to get a signed waiver from your doctor saying that you are in enough physical condition to be able to complete the test. In the written examination you will take a test tnat consist 0T multlple cnolce answers tnat wlll see now mucn Knowledge you have on how you comprehend things, handle different situations, your observation nd memory. During the background check investigators will check your previous employment, criminal records, medical history and you credit history. In the polygraph, medical and drug screening you will have a series of test like how truth you were when filling out your background packet and get tested for illegal drug use. Once all the steps are completed in that part of the process the candidate is closer to becoming a deputy but is not done yet. Now the candidate must complete the training needed to perform your Job. They will have to go to an academy for seven onths while completing the required academic test and take part in physical training and upon graduation you will earn two certificates, one from the Maryland police and one from the correctional training commission. The duties and responsibilities of the deputy sheriff are to enforce state and federal laws. They patrol the community to prevent crimes from occurring against people or property. Green, M. 1999). They also do a lot of investigating in traffic accidents where they will take photos of the crime scene, collect evidence, and with integrity write their eports about situations that happen in their daily routines. The Deputy Sheriff also plays a huge part in the court house and Jail division. In the court house deputys serve as security and when ever their needed to be in court their there no matter if its maintain peace in the court room or testifying as a witness. A career is something that people work very hard to get and work very hard to keep but having the title of deputy sheriff is not an easy title to keep. Everyone is not cut out to take on the things they see, hear, feel, and go through. It is a very stressful Job and a dangerous one. Besides the patrols and giving out traffic tickets a deputy will face violent criminals and accouter serious criminal activity. Your life can also be in danger and those that you love as well. You have to be mindful about the things you say and the things you do because you do not Just represent yourself you represent the sheriffs department and anything you do will affect the department in either a negative or positive way. The citizens trust in them to do the right thing and to do heir Job right so they can feel protected and safe in their own environment. With all jobs they will have a negative side to it but becoming a deputy has its positive side to it as well. They provide a since of hope, peace, and can make a huge difference in the world. The pay and benefits are good and their family is taken can of. Taking the position of a deputy sheriff is a once in a life time experience that most people will never know about but the ones that do accept the challenge to becoming one will never regret it.
